Can we talk about how great LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is?
This is not a full review of the game but just a comment on the story or main campaign.
For those of you who may be unaware of the story of the game, here is the official synopsis.
So as they put there, the main hub world is Chronopolis. It's a city that the villain Kang the Conqueror has created by tampering with time and space.
Chronopolis is a fantastic hub world and it allows you to be in a bunch of the different pockets of the Marvel universe.
The different cities within Chronopolis include:
- Kang's Citadel
- The Old West
- Hydra Empire
- K'un Lun
- Manhattan Noir
- Man-Thing's Swamp
- Liberty Island
- Medieval England
- Nueva York (Future New York)
The city is very lively and is very active with characters and things to do! just don't ask me why they called future New York, Nueva York. It seems to only be a thing in some Marvel video games.
If you know anything about the LEGO Marvel Games it's that they pack every character they possibly can into the game. The team over at TT Games has really gone into the Marvel vault here.
I’m not going to name them all because there are 200+ characters. Obscure characters are featured in the story like Spider-Gwen, Hulk 2099 and Thor (Jane Foster). All of these characters stay true to their comic book counterpart which is impressive, to say the least.
No Spoilers here.
The main antagonist, Kang the Conqueror, is just trying to rule over the world he has created. He has some other villains working with and against him and every villainous act is within the evil character’s M.O.
They even use some story elements from the mainstream movies. Especially with a location like Sakkar from the movie Thor: Ragnarok, you can expect some gladiators and Xander is right out of the GotG movies.
The extra levels from the season pass are really just remixes of the current movies but that's not a bad thing. Usually, movies turned video game are not well received but with LEGO, you get a condensed version of the story with some jokes. They don’t themselves too seriously which works in TT Games favor.
TT Games and LEGO
I love TT Games and LEGO because they make great games with family humor and interesting story. There is always a pun around the corner, a physical gag in the background and silly interactions.
The innocence of these games is welcome but the depth they go into the lore of the Marvel universe is a beautiful thing.
If you haven’t played any of the LEGO series games, I’m afraid to say that you are missing out. They have plenty of lore information in there to please a long time Marvel fan with gameplay that will let everyone play with you. Couch co-op is sincerely missed in my opinion, and these games have it in spades.
Hey LEGO and TT Games! Keep doing what you are doing!
